The Portuguese Ambassador to São Tomé and Príncipe, Luís Gaspar da Silva and the European Union Ambassador, Rosário Bento Pais, represented by the Cooperation Attaché in São Tomé and Príncipe, Dr. Albert Losseau, delivered a first batch of personal protective equipment, laboratory materials and medical consumables to the Minister of Health of Sao Tome and Principe, Dr. Edgar Neves. The delivery took place on the morning of July 30th, at the Sao Tome and Principe Ministry of Health, with the presence of the IMVF representative in the country, Dr. António Lima.

The materials were acquired in the framework of the project Support to the COVID-19 pandemic response in Sao Tome and Principe, co-financed by the European Union and the Portuguese Government, through Camões – Institute of Cooperation and Language, I.P., for a total amount of 480,000 euros, of which 360,000 euros were financed by the European Union and 120,000 euros by Camões, I.P., and implemented by IMVF. This delivery constitutes the first activity under this project which lasts 18 months (from 1 July 2020 to 31 December 2021).

The main objective of this project is to strengthen the capacities of Sao Tome and Principe in its response to epidemics and, specifically, to provide emergency support and strengthen the intrinsic capacity of the national health system of Sao Tome and Principe in the prevention and control of the epidemic of COVID-19 in the country.
