INTEGRALITY
Multi-stakeholder strategies for the promotion of INTEGRation and LegALITY of migrants’ employment in agriculture
Austria, Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Portugal
International migration and third country nationals (TCN) integration and inclusion has become one of the most challenging topics for EU Member States, particularly since the refugee crisis of 2015-2016 and, more recently, the recent Ukraine war refugees’ flow. Today, around 34 million European inhabitants were born outside the EU (around 8% of the EU population) and 10% of young people between 15 and 34 years-old born in the EU have at least one foreign-born parent (Eurostat, 2019).
The integration of migrants in the EU society is not only a fundamental value and principle of the Pillar of Social Rights, it is also an opportunity to respond to crucial EU societal challenges, and to stimulate a sustainable economic recovery.
OUR GOALS
The Integrality project intends to encourage full integration of migrants’ labour in agriculture, following a framework of Legality and respect for workers’ Human Rights, by activating multi stakeholder European transnational partnerships, including local authorities, private sectors, civil society and migrant and TCN themselves.
OUR ACTIVITIES
The project will start by creating a multi stakeholder network of different relevant actors in the decision-making process. That network will support the elaboration of local strategies for work inclusion and socio-economic integration.
Agri-food supply-chain operators will then be involved to address the ways and advantages of legal employment of third countries nationals as well as risks connected with illegal employment and migrants’ exploitation.
To do so, the project will create a manual of good practices on work inclusion of migrants in agriculture, increase visibility and promote best practices in the field of migrants work inclusion, and create a common EU ethical brand assuring the compliance of agricultural operators with high migrant labour rights standards.
Migrant population working in agriculture will also be sensitized during workshops on labour exploitation in agricultural sector.
Finaly, the project will produce awareness raising and communication campaigns addressed to different target audience, such as CSOs, associations of migrants’ protection, activists, further local, national and international institutions, educative institutions, youth associations, media and foundations engaged on the ethical issues.
OUR IMPACT
The project proposed activities foresees both concrete short-term effects related to the ethical integration of migrants in agricultural field, with the involvement of both companies and migrants themselves, as well as long-term effects related to capacity building activities aimed at public bodies and various stakeholders.
By acting at these different levels, the project expects to promote integration and legality in the agricultural labour market, contributing therefore to build a more inclusive, cohesive, resilient and prosperous European society.
Integrality is a European project funded by the European Union through the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF). It gathers 9 organisations (local authorities and CSOs) from 5 member-states of the EU – Austria, Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Portugal.
