Nowadays we know that every year natural disasters are the cause of displacement of almost 14 million people. As the climate crisis deepens, the number of those displaced due to climate-related factors also rises. It is predicted that in 2050 more than 143 million people will be environmentally displaced. In fact, the established link between natural phenomena and forcibly displaced populations is staggering, as the number of those displaced due to climate-related factors is superior to those displaced because of persecution or armed conflict.
The role that climate change presents in driving present and future trends in migration, along with the legal statute of climate migrants is complex and demands a detailed understanding of the factors underlying migration. Poverty, conflict, economic conditions, ecosystem degradation, lack of governance, among other topics, are only some of the factors that determine current migratory movements. But are we in fact conscious of these interconnections and their impact on the promotion of the 2030 Agenda – Transform our World? And at a time when challenges emerging from the situation caused by COVID-19 that shifted our gaze towards our national agendas, won’t it contribute to defocus our attention from the problems emerging at humanitarian and environmental levels? Will we be able to keep our focus on the promotion of a just, inclusive and sustainable development process?
It is precisely the interconnectedness of themes between these challenges and the development process, as well as our role as development actors that the #ClimateOfChange campaign will focus on.
The goal of the #ClimateOfChange campaign is to not only improve the understanding and awareness of young European citizens on Development Education and Global Citizenship’s most compelling topics, but also to engage them and promote healthy and sustainable lifestyle patterns and a change towards a human oriented sustainable model economy within our planetary boundaries.
For 40 months we will work on the axis Knowledge – Awareness – Campaign – Advocacy to ensure that the #ClimateOfChange campaign is established upon a solid basis of facts proving the need for the promotion of healthy and sustainable lifestyle patterns and a change towards a human oriented sustainable economy within our planetary boundaries.
